EXECUTIVE SUMMARY & DESIGN CHALLENGE

ADA Newspaper, a leading national daily in Sri Lanka, launched “Soba Badada” (Eco-Wednesday)—a weekly editorial initiative dedicated to nature, conservation, and environmental awareness. The core challenge was to design a distinct sub-branding identity for Wednesday editions while navigating strict brand guidelines: preserving the primary, legally protected ADA logo (traditionally a black box with orange typography) without alienating regular readers or diluting brand recognition.

LOGO ARCHITECTURE & VISUAL PROBLEM-SOLVING

  • Organic Sub-Logo Form: Crafted “Soba Badada” using custom hand-written script enclosed in a circular emblem filled with green vector nature icons, contrasting the rigid square shape of the primary ADA logo.
  • Preserving Master Brand Rules: Changing the primary logo’s square box was legally and visually off-limits. To adapt it for Wednesday, the black background was shifted to rich green.
  • Restoring Brand Compactness (Double-Box Line): Shifting from deep black to green caused a slight loss in visual weight and richness. To fix this, a subtle inner border line was added inside the box, restoring structural sharpness and premium contrast.
  • Botanical Integration & Education: A native Sri Lankan plant branch graphic was added below the logo, directly tied to an educational “Plant Facts” feature page inside the issue.

FRONT-PAGE LAYOUT STRATEGY & COMMERCIAL IMPACT

  • Wednesday Color Dominance: Engineered Wednesday’s Page 1 using diverse shades of green, pairing top headlines with major environmental news or impactful nature photography.
  • 4-Day Color Suppression: Deliberately minimized green elements on non-Wednesday editions. This created a stark visual contrast, making the Wednesday paper stand out instantly on newsstands.
  • Commercial & Ad Revenue Growth: The distinct eco-theme attracted corporate advertisers seeking green initiatives. Companies booked green-themed ads specifically for Wednesday, increasing ad revenue.
  • ESG & NGO Partnerships: Environmental organizations and eco-brands prioritized Wednesday editions for public announcements, solidifying ADA’s position as a green media leader.
